Top Things That Can Damage Your Commercial Roof

Blog

If you would like to make sure that your commercial roofing is going to hold up for as long as possible, you will need to learn all you can about the things that can cause serious damage to your roof. The more you learn, the easier it will be for you to protect the condition of your roof and to spot small issues that should be quickly repaired before more damage is done. Here are some of the things that you will want to keep an eye out for:

Tree Branches

Some people enjoy having a tree, or multiple trees, growing right next to their building. The trees can be a lovely sight to see, and they can also provide plenty of shade for the business. The more shade the building receives, the cooler it will be on the inside during the warmer months. However, when trees are very close to the property, you have to watch for tree branches. Make sure that there are no branches touching the roof because when the wind blows, those branches can scrape against the roofing tiles or shingles, causing damage to them. Even if the tree branches are not actually touching the roof, if they hang over it, you still want to have those branches removed. The heavier the branch, the more damage it will cause should branches break off of the tree and fall directly on your roof.

Missing Flashing

Flashing around the chimney or vents is there for an important reason. It keeps the water from getting beneath the shingles and damaging the wood beneath them. Therefore, if you notice that your roof has some missing flashing, you will want to have a roofer put more on. This is for more than appearances. This is to prevent your roof from becoming severely damaged.

Hanging Out On The Roof

Some people have sections of their commercial roof that are flat or easy enough to sit on, and people will go up there to enjoy the local scenery or to have a better look at the town fireworks. Even if your roof looks like it is the ideal pitch to enjoy sitting up there, don't do it. Not only is it unsafe to hang out on the roof, but the excessive walking on the shingles can cause some of them to come loose. Then, all it will take is a heavy windstorm, and you might find that a lot of shingles will start to fall off of your roof.

As you can start to imagine, there are a lot of things that you want to be careful about because of the damage that can happen to your roof. If you need some help fixing your roof, make sure that you are hiring an experienced commercial roofing contractor for the work.

Roofing Fundamentals: What To Know Before Replacement

When it came time to install a new roof on my home, I had no idea where to start. In fact, I was exploring roofing options that were a really poor fit in my climate. It wasn't until I reached out to a local roofer that I got some lessons on how to choose the right roofing material for my home and the weather exposure it is subjected to. I built this site to share my journey, including the mistakes I made and the things that I learned along the way. If you are considering replacing your home's roof, I hope that the information here can help to guide you through the process.
